Agriculture

We are devoted to supplying agricultural education to low and middle-income families. Our goal is to empower individuals and families with the knowledge and skills to grow their own food, improve their health, and build self-sufficiency.

Our organization understands that access to healthy food and sustainable farming practices is a crucial aspect of maintaining healthy communities. We believe that everyone, regardless of their income level, deserves the opportunity to learn how to grow their own food, care for animals, and become active participants in the local food system.

Alabama NRCS 2017 Small Farmers of the Year Russell and Jewell Bean

Jewell and Russell offer a one-year training certificate to anyone interested in farming. They cover everything agricultural. Most of their trainings are geared toward New and Beginning Farmers/Ranchers, Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Military Veterans.

Meet Russell and Jewell Bean

Russell & Jewell Bean are third-generation farmers based in Eufaula, Alabama. They operate 88 acres on S & B Farm, which has been in Jewell’s family for 105 years. Jewell & Russell are award-winning farming experts. They were named 2016 Lloyd Wright Small Farmer and 2017 Small Farmers of the Year by Alabama NRCS. They have also been featured in several top magazines, newspapers and televisions stations.

Jewell & Russell received Resolutions from Alabama House of Representatives, Alabama State Senate and Barbour County Commission for their work as farmers in the community, county, state and region. Jewell is a Resource Specialist for Food, Nutrition, Health, Youth and Community Development with Tuskegee University. Russell is a Resource Specialist for Small Farm, Agriculture and Environment with Tuskegee University. Russell and Jewell have several published research papers in the Professional Agricultural Workers Journal.

In addition to our educational programs, we also offer community events, workshops, and volunteer opportunities for individuals and families. We partner with local organizations, schools, and community groups to bring our educational programs to a wider audience.

Our organization is funded through donations and grants, and we are committed to making our programs accessible to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. We offer scholarships and sliding-scale fees to ensure that our programs are affordable for low and middle-income families.

Agriculture Programs:

We provide educational programs that offer hands-on experience and practical knowledge in the following areas:

Gardening:

Our gardening program teaches the basics of soil health, composting, seed starting, pest management, and plant care. Participants will learn how to grow their own fruits, vegetables, and herbs using sustainable practices.

Food Preservation:

Our food preservation program teaches the basics of canning, freezing, and dehydrating fruits and vegetables. Participants will learn how to preserve their harvests and extend the shelf life of their produce.

Livestock Management:

Our livestock management program teaches the basics of raising chickens, rabbits, and other small animals for eggs, meat, and other products. Participants will learn about animal care, housing, nutrition, and processing.

Sustainable Agriculture:

Our sustainable agriculture program teaches the principles of sustainable farming practices, including crop rotation, cover cropping, and integrated pest management. Participants will learn how to reduce their environmental impact and build healthy soil.
